Water & Marine: Sector Champions
Peter Simpson: Managing Director of Anglian Water
“This is all about helping and supporting businesses to grow and succeed, and about making sure we tackle any barriers that may stand in the way of economic growth. The Red Tape Challenge is a timely and all-important opportunity for our industry to lead the way in helping to shape and deliver better regulation. Regulation protects vital customer interests, but it must also encourage companies to be innovative and more agile in today’s challenging business environment. Getting it right could mean all the difference between success and failure, and I welcome the opportunity to help lead the Red Tape Challenge.”
Peter Simpson has national and international experience in the water industry. He has been Managing Director of Anglian Water since January 2010, having previously been Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for the strategic direction and day-to-day operation of the business.
His international experience has included positions within the international division of Anglian Water Group, including Regional Director for Europe and South America, based in the Czech Republic, and Senior Vice President of Operations, based in the USA.
Peter is a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager, a Chartered Environmentalist and a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner. He also holds an MBA from Warwick Business School, and is currently the Chair of Water UK.
Barrie Deas: Chief Exec, National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations
“It is well recognised that the fishing industry specifically suffers from a regulatory framework that is cumbersome and unresponsive on the one hand and ineffective at delivering workable resource policies on the other, as highlighted by the failure of the Common Fisheries Policy. A radical simplification of fisheries legislation is required and I am pleased to be involved in this important initiative.”

Barrie Deas is Chief Executive of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations, the representative body for fishermen in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. In this capacity he is also Chair of the Demersal Working Group of the North Sea Regional Advisory Council and the Executive Committee of the North West Water Regional Advisory Council. He is Vice–President of the European fisheries trade association, Europeche and also sits on the EU Advisory Committee for Fisheries and Aquaculture and the BBC Rural Affairs Committee. He is an ambassador to the marine programme of the International Sustainability Unit.
